Eyes, Hair, Skin And The Colors Of The Seasons

Seasonal ColorsAre you a Summer, Winter, Autumn or a Spring? What season are you?

There are many different skin complexions, hair colors and eye colors and each one of them has seasonal characteristics. Knowing what season you are, or what combination of seasons you have can help you find the clothes and makeup hues that suit you best.

Every fashion designer creates seasonal collections with the appropriate seasonal colors. When you know what season your features are, you can find the clothing colors that work best for you by browsing through the various collections for your season. Many cosmetic makers also have seasonal hues for eyeshadow, blush and lipstick as well.

In addition to seeing what colors will work best for you, you can also create a season for yourself. Hair is the easiest to color, but eyeshadow, blush and color contact lenses can transform your whole look as well.

Summer

Summer Skin

  • Summer skin is pale and has a tendency to appear washed out
  • It is transparent and delicate looking
  • Summers are not prone to blushing
  • Soft pastels, no dark colors, and the lightest colors with pink tones are good colors for a Summer

Summer Eyes

  • They can be greyish green, hazel, brown or deep blue

Summer Hair

  • Brown, blonde, red or light brown

Winter

Winter Skin

  • Winter skin has cool rose undertones. It can also be a dark olive with blue undertones
  • It may be pale, but it’s darker than pale Summer skin
  • While a rosey undertone to the skin is natural, rosy cheeks are rare

Winter Eyes

  • They can be grey-blue, brown, brown-black or a combination
  • They usually are not green

Winter Hair

  • Blonde, white-blonde or brunette

Autumn

Autumn Skin

  • Autumn skin is yellow-gold. A fair skinned Autumn may be a light gold
  • Autumn can be like Spring, but there is more orange to Autumn skin

Autumn Eyes

  • They can be light blue, green, rey-green or any combination of blue-green. Autumns can also have brown or green-brown eyes
  • Some other things you might see in Autumn eyes are gold flecks, gold or brown around the iris, or small flecks against opaque green eyes

Autumn Hair

  • Brown with a metallic sheen

Spring

Spring Skin

  • Spring skin likes to tan and it blushes easily. It’s a rosy, natural skin color
  • You’ll might find light amber gold tones or a yellow undercast

Spring Eyes

  • Brown eyes are rare for Springs, but not impossible
  • Springs have clear bright blue, bright green, blue-green or blue-grey eyes
  • Sometimes you’ll find a mustard color around the iris. Springs eyes are lively and watery

Spring Hair

  • Any color

Switch It Up

Summers need color more than any other season because of the pale colors in their features. Summers and Winters are cool skin tones while Springs and Autumn are warm skin tones.

Try wearing the right colors for your season for a while and then switch completely over to a new hair, makeup, and clothes ensemble. People will notice something very different about you and they won’t know quite what it is. A little mystery is always good.

There are also personality traits that go along with each season, but that’s for a future post.

5 Rules For Living A Healthier Lifestyle

ico-5rFirst things first. Happy New Year!!!

Every year, millions of New Year’s resolutions are made. A couple weeks later they’re mostly forgotten. Of course there is always the odd success story. This year, one of those success stories is going to be yours.

We usually resolve to do something like stop smoking, lose weight, exercise regularly … basically we resolve to build a better lifestyle. A healthier lifestyle. No matter what your resolution is, it’s important to look at the big picture. With a few basic tools … er, rules … you can go after your resolution and make it happen.

These are the five rules for living a healthier lifestyle:

  1. Make conscious decisions. All habits including the bad ones are things we do automatically. Unconsciously. It’s important to make a conscious decision if you want to create change. Write down your resolutions, your goals, your dreams. Write them all down in a notebook. And then write them down again, maybe on a sticky note. Put those notes where you’re going to see them when you need to see them most. Get a stickynote program for your computer. Part of making a strong resolution is to think about all the things you need to do to make it happen. Make a list of tasks and to-dos for each goal you’ve set for yourself.
  2. Moderate. Even good things are bad for you if you overdo them. Fresh fruit is good for you - but if that’s all you ate, your body wouldn’t get the other essential things it needs like protein. And if you ate fifty pounds of fresh fruit every day … that’s a lot of sugar, which fruit contains naturally. A great cornerstone of good health is balance and diversity. Change your workout schedule once in a while. Try different exercises that will affect your muscles in different ways. Moderation in everything ensures that you limit the bad stuff, create a diverse mix of good stuff, and you never hit a wall and give up completely.
  3. Replace bad things with good things. It’s difficult to make any progress running away from something. You’re always looking over your shoulder, and in a way, you’re still concentrating your attention on that thing you’re trying to escape. Run to things. Good things. Psychology tells us that we fill emotional holes with food or excessive alcohol consumption. We fill them with garbage which creates a cycle that’s hard to get out of. Fill your empty spaces with good things. Lots of different and good things (remember moderation?). When you run to something, that’s what you’re focused on.
  4. Fuel up. Move. Rest. One of these things or two of these things … is one or two things too little. Your body needs a well balanced mix of fuel, work and rest to be at it’s fittest. Make conscious decisions to get all three. Moderate each of these things to get balance. Replace the bad things (like fatty fuel) with good things. Your body is the vehicle that takes you where you want to go and you only get one. Take care of it, and it will always get you to where you want to go. When you have the strength and energy to tackle your family or career goals, you will succeed.
  5. Have fun. Don’t sweat the small stuff. If you’re not enjoying what you do, you won’t do it for very long. Make it fun. Make it enjoyable. Make your resolutions and goals into things that you want to do. This is how you replace bad habits with good habits effectively. It’s all about lifestyle. You don’t want to lose fifty pounds … you want to learn how to make the best chicken caesar salad on the planet and then go for a stroll along the beach with your friends so you can talk about how you’re going to take over the world.

How To Put On Your Lipstick And Make It Shimmer

LipstickThere is a secret to creating lips that glisten and shimmer.

With just a few tips you can make your lips dance in the light. The techniques are a lot like those used for creating highlights, and contours with eyeshadow and eyeliner. The main idea is to use two shades of lipstick and two shades of lip liner. The versatility you get with using two colors also lets you shape your lips, making them a little fuller in just the right places, without looking like you just came from a clown convention.

The great thing is that you can use these tips whether you’re going for a fresh and natural look, or want to spice it up a little with rich, vibrant night-on-the-town colors. What you need are two lipstick colors that go together; a darker color and a lighter color. You also need two lip liner pencils that match the lipsticks your going to use.

For a fresh and natural look, select neutral colors and if you’re using warm colors on your eyes then stick to using warm colors on your lips.

Why Use Lip Liner Pencils?

Using a lip liner can look really gaudy if it’s put on in a way that makes it stand out. Choosing the color to match the lipstick as close as possible is essential to preventing this. But lip liners perform some important functions:

  • They define the edge of the lips
  • They are used to contour and make little lip shaping corrections
  • They prevent your lipstick from bleeding around the edges

Lipstick Application

There are six basic steps to applying lipstick with this method. To add some contouring or shaping to your lips to make them fuller or narrower, you can use the contouring corrections discussed below first, but these are the basic steps:

  1. Outline your lips using your dark lip liner pencil.
  2. Fill in the lips with your dark lipstick which matches the pencil color you just applied.
  3. Blot. Use a dry, lint free tissue. Press your lips over it like you’re biting into it, but be carful not to press so firmly that you smudge it.
  4. Re-outline your lips using your light colored lip liner pencil.
  5. Fill in using your light lipstick color
  6. Blot again.

After you’re finished, and depending on how flat your lipstick is, you can apply some gloss to give them some extra sheen. Gloss can be used on vibrant or neutral colors.

Lip Contouring Corrections

If you want your lips to look fuller or you think they’re too wide you can create a contouring layer of color before applying your normal lipstick. Contouring or shaping is done by applying your dark and light colors plus an additional medium color in certain places around your lips. This contouring layer is put on first and then the basic lipstick application discussed above goes over top.

It might take some practice, so don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t turn out runway ready the first time. These are the different lip types and how you can make suttle corrections with a little contouring magic:

  • Wide lips. Outline and shade the corners of your lips with a medium pencil. Be sure to stay inside the lipline. Outline the center of your lips, just outside the lipline using a light liner pencil. Apply the basic lipstick application. If you use gloss, apply it to the center of the mouth and not to the corners.
  • Down-turned corners. On the inside of the lipline, outline your top lip using a medium liner pencil. Outline your bottom lip with a light pencil applied to the outside of your lipline. Then apply your basic lipstick as normal.
  • Thin lips. Outline the outside of your lipline using a light liner pencil. Cover the outline with a medium colored lipstick. Blot. Apply basic makeup, but just the light color. Light colors and shiny lipsticks work well to bring more fullness to thin lips.
  • One thin lip. If either you top or bottom lip is overly thin then use the thin lip correction on the thinner lip. Use a normal lipstick application on the other lip. Only apply gloss to the thinner lip and only if it is your bottom lip, otherwise don’t use gloss.

Note: Your lipline is the natural outline of your lips. By applying liner and lipstick to the outside of the lipline in certain areas, you are making these areas larger and fuller. By keeping your makeup inside the lipline, you keep certain areas smaller.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully you can see how using different shades and creating two or three layers can bring a richness to your lips. These little extras give your lips an extra dimension that brings them alive far more than just a swipe of your usual lipstick can.

Play around with the different techniques. Try different colors, both natural and vibrant, warm and cool. You’ll love the results you get using these professional techniques. It takes a bit more time and concentration, but that’s good. That’s just what you want to take your mind off things and ease your jitters if you’re getting ready for a big date.

The Fight Against Acne Goes Digital

myZenoAbout the size of an iPod nano, the Zeno pushes the bacteria that cause acne into a state of heat shock, killing them with it’s microprocessor controlled thermal unit.

It’s about time someone invented a clean, stylish, take-anywhere gadget that fights acne. And Tyrell, the creators of the Zeno, have done a great job. The buzz is that it works great, clearing up the significant effects of pimples within twenty four hours. It’s not surprising then that this cool little gadget won the coveted Allure Best of Beauty award. To see how Tyrell’s trademarked technology works, it’s important to first understand how acne happens.

What Causes Acne

There are some special medical conditions that can cause acne but 90% of the time it is caused by the natural bacteria present on your skin. When this bacteria gets into your pores and the pores get blocked, you get acne. A good skin care regimen can help eliminate or reduce acne, but you still might have problems if you have really dry or oily skin.

Pore blockage occurs when dry skin sheds itself or when the natural oils (sebum) your skin produces are excessive. There are a lot of other factors that can contribute to the problem as well. Some of those factors are diet, humidity, pollution and heredity.

How The Zeno Fights Acne

When you place the Zeno’s treatment tip against a blemish, it’s processor tracks the temperature of your skin and continuously adjusts the temperature it applies to your skin. This way, it applies enough heat to kill acne causing bacteria, but it won’t burn your skin.

The makers of the Zeno say that a couple treatments of two and a half minutes each are enough to effectively kill most of the bacteria. Within twenty four hours, most acne blemishes in their clinical studies were significantly cleared up. The only side effect they encountered was a slight temporary redness of the skin sometimes following a treatment.

More about the Zeno

It’s hand-held, rechargable, and fits easily in your purse or your pocket. You can get the Zeno at Amazon where it comes with a bunch of replacement tip cartridges.

Crafting A Classic Natural Eye Shadow And Eyeliner Look

Eye Shadow and EyelinerOne of the biggest secrets in the fashion industry is applying makeup to create a fresh and natural look. Neutral colors and the right techniques will accent and highlight everything just right. The result is a natural, beautiful look that’s perfect day or night, in photographs or face to face.

After you’ve done some tweezing and classic eyebrow shaping or worked in a few eyebrow shaping tricks to get them just right it’s time to look at putting on some eye shadow and eye liner. It’s all about choosing the right colors and applying them in the right places to give your eyes nice contours and a healthy glow.

Choosing Your Makeup Colors

Foundation: A lot of women just throw on some lipstick and a little eyecolor as part of their daily routine. Perfectly fine, especially if you’ve got healthy, radiant skin. If you feel like going the extra mile and applying a foundation, then test out a few and find one that matches your skin color exactly. Keep the application light. Nothing looks worse than caked on foundation.

Eye shadow: You want three different colors; a light color, a dark color, and a medium color. They should have the same tone and stick to the more natural looking neutral colors. You can experimant with more vibrant colors once you’ve mastered the fresh and natural look. Warmer colors look great anytime and photograph the best. Cooler colors are best reserved for a special night out on the town when you want a more vivacious look.

Eyeliner: Two colors; a medium color and a light color. Stay away from dark colors when you’re going for “fresh and natural”. Most people only use one eyeliner color and two colors of eyeshadow. The extra color for each is what is going to give your style that extra little bit of giddyup. The pros don’t use pencils or liquid. They use eyeliners that are solid little cakes that you mix with water to make into liquid. It’s not as quick but it gives you a lot of control when you mix it yourself.

Applying Eyeliner

Start with eyeliner because you don’t want to try and apply it after you’ve dusted on your eye shadow. You can always touch it up after applying your eye shadow.

Use your medium colored eyeliner and apply it around the outside two thirds of your eyes, top and bottom.

Use your light eyeliner and apply it around the inner one third of your eyes. Blend it in gently where it meets the medium eyeliner. The light liner’s job is too brighten up your eyes after the medium color has defined and outlined them.

Applying Eye Shadow

Once your eyeliner is set, it’s time to pull out the eyeshadow brush. Really good brushs are so soft they feel like air on your skin. Good quality makeup brushes make blending in your colors naturally a lot easier than trying to work with hard brushes.

Apply a gentle wash of your lightest color from your eyelashes to your eyebrows. Brush up and away from the center of your face and blend the color out really well on either side.

Next, apply your darkest color to the crease at the top of your eyelid. This is the trickiest part of eye makeup. Blend the eye shadow really well and keep it narrower on the inside.

Finally, apply your medium accent color from your eyelashes to the crease. Concentrate this color on the outside half of the eye and blend it in well with your light base towards the inside corners of your eyes.

Touch Ups

If you’ve washed out your eye liner after applying your shadowing then touch it up a bit. Be really careful with any kind of touch-ups or reworking because it can quickly turn into a mess or get to the point where your makeup is too thick to look natural. Then the best thing to do is just wash it all off and start over.

Add a little bit of eyebrow color and some mascara for a bolder look if you want. Just remember, sometimes less is more.

That’s it! Classic. Fresh. Natural. Beautiful.

Essential Skin Care Tips

Skin CareAre you comfortable in your skin?

Skin care is one of the most important and most talked about topics concerning both beauty and health. You live in your skin, play in it, sleep in it, and do … everything in it!

Good skin care is easy with a little education about how your skin works - so here are some tips and facts to help you take good care of your birthday suit.

What Your Skin Needs To Be Healthy And Beautiful

Your skin benefits from the things inside and outside your body. A well balanced diet, plenty of water, and adequate rest are important for healthy skin. Exercising helps improve circulation and blood flow to your skin which helps it to renew and repair itself more quickly.

On the outside, regular cleansing, moisturizing, and shielding it from the elements is important. Massaging also helps to promote blood flow and the shedding of dead skin cells. Using a loofah sponge in the shower is a great way to massage, scrub away dead cells, and in general, cleanse your skin all at the same time.

While oily skin can be more prone to acne, it has the benefit of retaining its youthful look a lot longer than other skin types. A good diet and skin care regimen help to ward off acne which occurs when the oils block your pores. Working up a sweat with regular exercise also helps to flush out the pores so that dirt and bacteria don’t become trapped inside. Your skin might break out the first time you do a serious workout if your pores are already blocked up, but over time regular exercise will keep them flushed out and your skin will clear up.

The Sun And Your Skin

Coco Chanel is credited with making the suntan popular in the 1920’s after returning to Paris from her vacation in Deauville on the French coast. We now know that tanning has some good, healthy effects on the skin, but it can also cause blemishes, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

The good: Sun exposure speeds up cellular turnover because the skin is working hard to protect itself so it sluffs off dead cells and replaces them with fresh cells faster. This helps to keep your pores unclogged. It also keeps your skin free of dry, dead skin and creates a clear, healthy complexion. A light suntan will also camoflauge acne and minor skin imperfections. Tanning stimulates the pigment melanin which is where the bronze coloring comes from and is what gives the skin more protection from sunburn.

The sun also helps your body make vitamin D which helps to regulate calcium and phosphorus to build strong bones. Milk and cereals are often fortified with vitamin D, especially in climates that don’t get that much sunlight to make up for the lack of it.

The bad: Ultraviolet rays from the sun or from tanning beds can have a lot of harmful effects. UV rays can cause premature wrinkling and age spots. Wrinkling is caused as the UV rays penetrate your skin and destroy the collagen fibers inside. They also dehydrate the skin which gives it a tough leathery texture over time. Severe dehydration causes dryness and flaking after the initial tanning glow wears off which can be very uncomfortable and itchy.

Incidents of skin cancer have been on the rise for decades. Removing cancerous cells from the skin can be very disfiguring, but not catching it and treating it can have deadly consequences. The more often you get sunburned, the greater your chances are of getting skin cancer later on.

What to do: Always wear sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) and keep yourself covered as much as possible. You can get a bad sunburn or damage your skin in as little as fifteen minutes so limit your exposure to ten minutes at most. Try to stay out of the sun during the middle of the day - when the sun is high in the sky, its rays are at their harshest.

And after having fun in the sun, it’s a good idea to wash your face and body thoroughly to get rid of the excess oil and sweat that can clog up your pores.

Winter Skin Care

Humidity is a natural moisterizer and the humidity is lower during the winter. Low humidity and cold wind both contribute to drying out your skin very quickly. Even the sun can be just as harmful during the winter as it is in the summer. The winter chill means you don’t feel the heat as much as you would during the summer so exposed skin could be getting more rays than you think. Especially if you’re out in the snow on a bright, clear day.

What to do: Protect your skin and bundle up. Wear scarves and gloves. And moisturize your skin regularly. During the winter, you typically don’t sweat as much as in the summer and hot showers will remove a lot more of the natural oils from your skin. If the weather is nice, take your sunscreen snowboarding with you.

Pollution And Your Skin

In the city, smog does perform one good function for your skin. It blocks out some of the sun’s harmful UV rays. That’s about all the good it does. Air pollution is mostly bad, especially for your lungs, and it can leave a fine sooty residue on your skin which can provoke acne outbreaks.

Indoors, heating and air conditioning systems rob the air of moisture and can dry your skin out. Sanitizers, cleaning agents and room fresheners all contribute to drying out your skin - especially the aerosol sprays.

What to do: Wash your face more often, especially if you’re acne prone. Once or twice during the midday will prevent the dirt and grime caused by pollution from building up and clogging your pores. Indoors, try to keep the thermostat at a more moderate temperature. Another good thing to do is to keep a window open while you sleep or invest in a humidifier. Good ventilation helps keep the humidity level normal and the amount of airborne household chemicals down.

How Smoking And Drinking Affects Your skin

Smoking constricts the blood vessels in your skin and robs it of its blood supply. Smoking turns a healthy, color filled complexion to a dull grayish yellow. It also causes premature wrinkles.

Drinking alcohol dilates the blood vessels and gives your skin a warm glow. At least, moderate drinking does. Heavy or frequent drinking will turn that pretty little glow into a web of broken blood vessels over time that show up as little red lines.

What to do: Stop smoking, and not just for your skin, but for your health in general. If you drink, do it in moderation. After drinking alcohol, make sure you drink plenty of water or fruit juice soon after - this is also the best way to prevent a hangover because that wonderful pounding sensation in your head the next day is caused by severe dehydration.

Bikini waxing tips

  • Wash the area you are going to wax thoroughly. You want to make sure the area is dry and free of oil before you apply the wax.
  • Heat the wax using your microwave until it’s the consistency of thick honey. Try a test spot on the inside of your wrist to check the temperature before applying it to more sensitive areas.
  • Trim the hair you want to wax off down to 5mm or a quarter inch. You want the wax to bond to the base of the hairs close to the skin and trimming will help you do this without using a ton of wax and making a big mess.
  • Hair doesn’t grow straight out. It grows out at an angle which in most spots is downwards and away from the center of your body. Apply the wax in the same direction as the hair grows out and remove it against the direction of hair growth.
  • The wax will take about fifteen to thirty seconds to cool down so that it’s soft and pliable and ready to remove. As you pull the wax off, pull it quickly and pull it at an angle that’s close to your skin. Don’t pull it straight out away from your body.

Use it AND lose it

When you think bikini wax you think summer. But you can use Naughty Nads to make smooth lines for your next winter hot tub party or just to create a sexy surprise any time of year.
