Lucky Bamboo - The Perfect Plant for Non-Green Thumbs
Lucky Bamboo is the perfect low maintenance plant. You just put it into a container with some pebbles or small rocks and make sure that it gets water and a little light. You only have to water it about once a week or so, but do not let the water run out or the plant will die. A glass vase or clear container is good to easily monitor the water level.
If you’re having problems with your bamboo, remember, indirect sunlight is best and it is a good idea to gently rinse the roots if they get too grimy after awhile. Of course, fresh, clean water is important - if the water or container dirties easily, it is probably time to rinse the roots off to get rid of any buildup.
Bamboo is a nice clean plant for indoors. You do not have to worry about soil (none needed), fertilizer, or leaves falling everywhere. It can be toxic to pets, so it is best to keep it where they can not get at the leaves to chew on them.
What is so lucky about Lucky Bamboo? Bamboo has been a symbol of luck for thousands of years in Chinese culture. It is often used in Feng Shui and the number of bamboo stalks in an arrangement determines the meaning:
- 3 stalks mean “happiness”
- 4 stalks (not good, associated with death)
- 5 stalks mean “wealth”
- 7 stalks mean “good health”
So if you are looking for a simple, easy-to-care-for plant to add a little green to your place, think about Lucky Bamboo. And it also makes a great housewarming gift.

1I kind of like Money Trees too, although they do take soil. The two I have seem have been extremely trouble-free, and I like the way they look.
